A Research Project on the Development of Medical Technology and the History of Healthcare Professional Education

With the advancement of medical technology, various healthcare professions have come to play important roles in medical practice. As a result, national qualification systems and educational programs for healthcare professionals have been established. This study focuses on radiological technologists and aims to clarify the historical development of their training, from the establishment of the national qualification system to the creation of specialized education programs in university health science faculties. The study also examines how advances in radiological technology were introduced into and spread throughout clinical practice.
To achieve this goal, the project investigates and analyzes historical materials held by major universities, regional core hospitals, and the Japan Association of Radiological Technologists and its regional branches, as well as interviews with related individuals. Through an interdisciplinary approach involving researchers in university history, the history of science and technology, radiological technologist education, and radiological technology studies, the project seeks to clarify the historical development of radiological technologist training in Japan. The results of this study are expected to contribute to the education of radiological technologists by providing historical subjects such as the “History of Radiological Technology Studies.” (JSPS KAKENHI, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), 24K05686, April 2024 – March 2028)
